Kide presents its 50th anniversary celebrations

  • The cooperative from Berriatua (Lea Artibai) has prepared an extensive “celebratory programme” to commemorate its 50 years of existence. An internal committee from the cooperative itself has put together a programme featuring its own events and a long list of collaborations with local sports and cultural organisations.
  • Kide S.Coop. was established in 1975 under the leadership of José María Arizmendiarrieta and José María Ormaetxea, pioneers and creators of the cooperative movement and the early industrial cooperatives that laid the foundation for what is now the MONDRAGON Corporation.

Kide is a cooperative business project that has thrived thanks to the dedication of its members, the entrepreneurs who set up the first machine, and the subsequent generations who have carried forward their legacy. These individuals not only sought personal benefit but also aimed to promote social well-being, the development of their community, their town, and its people.

The cooperative is today an established company, consolidated in the markets in which it operates, profitable and a generator of employment. It is, without doubt, a successful socio-business project, and this is thanks to its people, to the commitment and daily efforts of each and every one of them. For all these reasons, and with the aim of celebrating fifty years together, with an invitation extended to the towns of Ondarroa, Berriatua and practically the whole of Lea Artibai, Kide S.Coop. has prepared its celebratory programme.

From April to October

The programme will kick off in April, with KIDE’s collaboration in organising a new edition of the BOGA Mendi Martxa mountain walk in Ondarroa. In this 2025 edition, participants will receive and wear a special T-shirt, designed for the occasion, to commemorate the cooperative’s fiftieth anniversary. Moreover, Kide has pledged to have its members assist in organising the event, including providing technical support.

In May, Kide will sponsor the Félix Aldazabal Cesta Punta Championship in Berriatua, and in June, the cooperative’s facilities will host the official presentation of the Antiguako Ama of Ondarroa. The “trainera” rowing boat and the rowers who will represent Ondarroa in the Eusko Label League will visit Kide’s revamped production plant to officially kick off the season.

In September, Kide will be present as a sponsor and collaborator at the Ondarroa children’s fishing championship and the Ondarroa-Lekeiti race. The main events to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary will take place in October. The company’s facilities will host the institutional ceremony on 3 October, with the presence of institutional representatives from Bizkaia and the Basque Country. The following day, 4 October, an open day will be held for all the families. This day is designed to recognise all those who are part of the collective, with this appreciation being extended to their families as well. The occasion will also be used to present the documentary video about the history of the cooperative. A documentary that will feature the voices of the key figures from this unique journey. The open day will include children’s games, inflatables, tastings of local cuisine and various performances.

Commemorative logo

They say that actions speak louder than words and that it’s more important to do than to say. Clichés perhaps, but not empty ones, especially when it comes to the cooperative sector. An internal committee formed by various members of the cooperative, is actively collaborating in the organisation of the events. As the first milestone, they launched a logo competition, open to everyone, to select the emblem for the year 2025. And they did just that, achieving an unexpectedly high level of participation.

The logo competition was launched in November, and in total, Kide received 83 designs and proposals from 68 different individuals. Sixty percent of the entries came from young people under 30, and the origins of the entries have also been unexpectedly diverse: Mexico, Guadalajara (Castilla La Mancha), Badajoz (Extremadura) and above all submissions from Berriatua, Ondarroa, Lekeitio and the rest of the Basque Country. The winner was the young Rocío Escribano, from Guadalajara.

Her logo will be displayed throughout the year 2025 on all the cooperative’s actions and communications.
